Kenya Keys

Feb 18, 2021 12:00 PM

Kenya Keys bridges two cultures - acting as a catalyst for educational achievement and leadership development - unlocking the potential of nearly 1000 students over the past 15 years. Our work is guided by these beliefs: Education is the most important tool we can use against poverty. Volunteerism is crucial to a vital, dynamic organization fostering global citizenship. Cultural exchange and exposure is vitally enriching for Americans and Africans. There should be no giving that increases dependency, invites discontent, and isolates the givers from the receivers. We provide opportunities, not handouts. All essential decisions should be made by local leadership and teams, giving the community crucial ownership, accountability, and leadership experience. We believe all people have the ability within themselves to solve their greatest challenges.  We thank you for supporting our vision of empowering students and changing lives through education!

This presentation will highlight the students, programs, and projects of Kenya Keys to help the East Portland Rotary awareness of the organization’s they have supported for several years.  We also will share the current and future vision and goals of the organization and then address questions for the group.

Covid-19 Vaccine & You

Mar 04, 2021 12:00 PM

Are you curious about the different COVID-19 vaccines?  Wonder what the side effects are?  How does your immune system work with the vaccine?  These are all good questions!

During this webinar, Dr. Christine Mayo Powers, PharmD BCPS, will discuss this and more.  Being a pharmacist, Dr. Mayo Powers has a great ability to explain these complex scientific concepts in a way we all can understand.  This is an historic time in our life, but it doesn’t have to by hysteric.  There is a lot that the medical community does know, and a few things we don’t.  Dr. Mayo Powers will answer your questions and also cover:

General overview of the COVID-19 virus and how it affects our immune system

How do each of the vaccines on the market work?

Are these vaccines safe, especially considering how fast they were brought to market?

How will your body react to the vaccine?

Can you still get sick with COVID-19 if you are vaccinated?

Can you still get others sick with COVID-19 if you are vaccinated?

Do the vaccines protect against new strains of the virus?

What is your part in stopping the pandemic?

Post-Trump America: Where Does American Politics Go From Here?

Apr 29, 2021 12:00 PM

The talk explores the state of American politics in the early stages of the Biden Administration.  What happened during the period between the election and the inauguration?  What shadow will the events of January 6th cast on electoral dynamics moving forward?  Were these just bumps in the road or signs of democratic deterioration?  Where do the political parties (and the rest of us) go from here?  This talk offers insight from political science research that both places the post-election period in context and offers guidance on the challenges and problems that remain.

We meet on Zoom.  If you would like to attend, please use the "contact us" button at the top to request the link.
