When COVID-19 struck in March 2020, people were catapulted into a nearly pure digital lifestyle. With so much isolation and disconnection, loneliness has now dug itself deeper into the hearts of many across the globe.

Kenya Keys
Feb 18, 2021 12:00 PM
Kenya Keys bridges two cultures - acting as a catalyst for educational achievement and leadership development - unlocking the potential of nearly 1000 students over the past 15 years. Our work is guided by these beliefs: Education is the most important tool we can use against poverty. Volunteerism is crucial to a vital, dynamic organization fostering global citizenship. Cultural exchange and exposure is vitally enriching for Americans and Africans. There should be no giving that increases dependency, invites discontent, and isolates the givers from the receivers. We provide opportunities, not handouts. All essential decisions should be made by local leadership and teams, giving the community crucial ownership, accountability, and leadership experience. We believe all people have the ability within themselves to solve their greatest challenges. We thank you for supporting our vision of empowering students and changing lives through education! This presentation will highlight the students, programs, and projects of Kenya Keys to help the East Portland Rotary awareness of the organization’s they have supported for several years. We also will share the current and future vision and goals of the organization and then address questions for the group. |

Reflections from East Portland Rotary's first exchange student
May 20, 2021 12:00 PM
In 1954-55, East Portland Rotary Club sponsored its first foreign exchange student, Lorenzo Matteoli from Milan, Italy. Lorenzo graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to graduate from and teach architecture at Turin Engineering Poli, ascending to the position of Dean of the School of Architecture. Elected as a Turin City Commissioner, he was responsible for the construction of the new Turin Stadium: Lo Stadio delle Alpi, the only public building in Italian history that was completed on time and within the contracted budget. Today he lives, writes, and studies in Perth, Australia and Nova Scotia. Despite a 15-hour time zone difference, Lorenzo, now 83-years old, wrote the following in response to the invitation to address East Portland Rotary, “I will be glad to attend via zoom: my only problem is that I might be slightly emotional and may have to control tears. The 1954-55 experience has been a life changing one for me and I have never forgotten the East Portland Rotary for sponsoring me. I really look forward to thanking EPRC as I never had the chance before." We meet on Zoom. Use the contact us button at the top to request the link. |
