From Grief to Resilience
Jan 23, 2020 12:00 PM
Loss of a dear loved one will impact us all sooner or later. How one grieves greatly impacts one’s present and future well-being. Without appropriate help often the result of a devastating loss is prolonged despair, emptiness, and desperation. With proper guidance and support, most of us are able to reconcile our loss and move ahead, reestablishing a productive and enjoyable life.
Dave Ripley is not a professional in this field. But he did suffer the shattering loss of his wife of 45 years eight years ago, and, thanks to so much wonderful support, was able to rebuild his life. For the past five years, he has helped facilitate a grief support group at an area hospital as a hospice volunteer, continuing to learn more about this important life topic and those who experience it. In his talk, “From Grief to Resilience”, he covers why it is so important to talk about this topic, common grief myths, and a wide range of activities that can help in moving to resilience. |

Oregon's Prison System - things you should know but don't!
Feb 13, 2020 12:00 PM
Oregon's prison system badly needs review! Fifty years ago (when the crime rate was higher) Oregon's population was 2.2 million and our three prisons housed less than 2000 people. Today our population is 4.2 million and we have 15,500 people in prison in over 20 facilities. We spend more on prisons than we do on Higher Education! Many of our prisons are in remote areas - long distances from families and visitors. Frankly, they got there as "economic development" more than sound planning! Oregon's Dept of Corrections and Youth Authority are lead by extremely competent professionals who are striving to make thoughtful changes. The Public needs to know what's going on! Roger and Trevor have a story you need to hear!"

Big Brothers, Big Sisters
Feb 27, 2020 12:00 PM
Who we are:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth-serving organization that creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. The organization has been around for over 100 years and has been established in the Portland metro area since 2002.
Need: Male Mentors! We have a large need for male mentors in our community. We currently have a wait-list of over 150 Little Brothers seeking a Big Brother.
What is the role of a “Big”?
As a volunteer, we ask that you meet with your “Little” twice a month for a minimum of one year. You and your Little get to choose activities of your interests. Activities can range from taking a stroll at the park, grabbing ice cream together, reading a book at the library, and so on.
The role of a Big is to be a friend, a listener, a supporter, and a positive role model.

How to Get Control of Overeating and Unhealthy Eating Habits
Jul 09, 2020 12:00 PM
Who does not love to eat? Food is enjoyable. Sharing meals with others is a profoundly human experience. But so many of us develop unhealthy eating habits: eating too much or too frequently, eating unhealthy and junk foods, developing cravings for sweets and snacks. These conditions cause many people to gain weight, possibly become obese, and end up with lifestyle illnesses such as type 2 diabetes.
As a medical professional, I have been researching the human impulse to overeat for more than 20 years. I have studied how we know when we are hungry and how we know when we feel full. In this talk, I will discuss what science tells us about how to gain better control of your eating habits. I will talk about our body's natural mechanisms that, if we pay attention to them, can help learn to eat better. For example, "eating like a toddler" is actually a great way to modify your eating habits. I will discuss why 3rd party diet programs and pre-prepared foods are seldom useful in changing your eating habits for the long-term. And most of all, I will help you see how YOU can regain control of your enjoyment of eating without gaining weight (and even losing weight if you need to) while avoiding or reversing type 2 diabetes.
