The Value of Keeping a Clear Picture of Your Business's Finances
Jul 11, 2019 12:00 PM
Many business owners think that they "don’t really pay attention to the numbers", but in practice, they do tend to follow one or two very simple metrics (such as the bank account balance), which by themselves do not give a clear picture. Keeping tabs on only part of the financial picture often leads to a reactive, “feast and famine" business style that’s overly risky and not a lot of fun. Eric believes the chances of success are much greater for those who view their business finances as a whole, and he will provide tips on how to do just that. Something as simple as reviewing financial reports for a few minutes each month can lead to much smarter decision-making by keeping false assumptions from gaining a foothold. Eric comes to us from Portland-based bookkeeping firm, Pine Ledger LLC. Eric has more than 10 years experience in small business accounting and has worked with dozens of small businesses across a wide variety of industries. He specializes in the analysis of financial reports, offering strategic advice to business owners on ways to run their businesses more profitably, and has also been a guest speaker at entrepreneurship classes for the Portland Metro SBDC.

Fluorescence Image-Guided Surgery for Improved Clinical Outcomes
Jul 18, 2019 12:00 PM
Surgery has a prominent role in clinical medicine with over 300 million surgeries performed annually worldwide. The ultimate goal of surgery is to repair damaged or remove diseased tissues, while minimizing comorbidities by preserving vital structures such as nerves and blood vessels. Even as surgical techniques and tools have substantially advanced, with high resolution preoperative imaging and minimally invasive surgical techniques becoming routine, surgeons still rely mainly on the basic tools of white light visualization and palpation for guidance during surgery, leaving incomplete cancer resection rates high and comorbidities like nerve damage as major problems. Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) has the potential to revolutionize surgery by enhancing visualization of specific tissues intraoperatively. Using optical imaging of targeted fluorescent probes, FGS offers sensitive, real-time, wide-field imaging using compact imaging systems that are easily integrated into the operating room. A number of FGS systems are clinically available, however only a handful of contrast agents have been FDA approved. Our group is working to develop clinically relevant contrast agent technology to aid in intraoperative cancer margin assessment, where we are currently focused on improving breast cancer resections. Our technology will permit accurate staining of the resected tumor specimens, where the fluorescent agents will not need to touch the patient, providing a rapid path to clinical translation. We have also developed the first nerve highlighting fluorophores that are compatible with the FGS clinical infrastructure. Nerve damage is a major source of morbidity across all surgical specialties which results in chronic neuropathies that limit patient quality of life. Since nerve tissue largely cannot be repaired, avoiding its injury is of paramount importance. Substantial pre-clinical development for both cancer margin assessment and nerve preservation has been completed, where our optimized technologies are now poised for translation to improve clinical outcomes. |

Aging Better. Stay at Home.
Aug 01, 2019 12:00 PM
Jean, now in her mid-80s, no longer navigates steep basement stairs with an armload of laundry in her Northeast Portland home thanks to volunteers who come twice a month to assist with laundry and change her bed. When her grandson was occupied with finals, volunteers restained her deck. Even more important, by being a member of a neighborhood-based “village”, Jean has greatly expanded her network of friends close to home and looks forward to new social activities such as coffees, walks, dining out and going to movies. We are facing a silver tsunami. Between 2010 and 2030 the number of adults over 65 will double. According to AARP, 89% of seniors prefer to stay in their homes. Most can with a little help. Through the national Village Movement, “Villages” are being created across the country to address this looming social issue. Villages NW has brought the Village Movement to Portland. In the past 3½ years, we have grown from one Village in Southeast Portland with 30 members to 8 Villages with more than 500 members in the metropolitan area with three additional Villages in development. Lyn Trainer, a Villages NW Board member, will give an overview of the Village Movement and how it is transforming aging in our community. |

The Evolution of Timber Framing and the Wild West
Aug 29, 2019 12:00 PM
Today's timber frame industry is the love child of the elegant European building methods and the fast, frenetic building methods of the wild west. Both building methods were pragmatic solutions for the societies of their time. Today's Timber framing reflects the desirable strengths of both methodologies.
Society's love affair with exposed beam construction continues to this day. 7 unique timber styles included in this presentation will underscore this point. The presentation will close with a short narrative about volunteer bridge building in Estonia. Our speaker is a member of the Timber Framer's Guild which helped organize this project.

Rising Disease Rates in the United States
Oct 24, 2019 12:00 PM
For over 7 years now I have been investigating and studying our healthcare system and the enormous rise in disease rates over recent years. The diabetes rates have soared from 32 million cases to well over 82 million in the U.S. alone and they are equally as severe in pre-diabeties, which means that 1/2 of Americans now are diabetic or nearly so.
The numbers on heart disease and cancer are climbing as well. We are clearly losing the war on disease prevention, reversal, and cures. These words aren't used anymore, just what pharmaceuticals we should take.
I tell the short stories of three Doctors who eliminated toxic foods from their own and their patients.eating plans. He worked with patients at death's doorway and had an extraordinarily high cure rate, almost 100%, just by mostly removing toxic foods. The others had similar results. The hundreds of millions of those learning to eat healthier and their children are now living long, healthy lives.

Portland Street Response
Nov 07, 2019 12:00 PM
The City of Portland is working on developing a new first response option: Portland Street Response. The goal of the Portland Street Response is to get the right first responder to the right call at the right time. Inspired by the City of Eugene’s CAHOOTS program, the Portland Street Response is an answer to the high number of calls emergency dispatchers receive, especially related to the houseless population and people dealing with mental health crises. The vision of Portland Street Response is to provide a new branch of first responders who are trained in behavioral health-related crisis intervention and first aid that can respond to 911 requests related to a behavioral health crisis or people experiencing houselessness that do not require police, fire, or ambulatory services. Commissioner Hardesty is currently working with the Mayor’s Office to convene a multi-jurisdictional stakeholder group to develop this pilot program. |

Wine
Nov 14, 2019 12:00 PM
James Frey, proprietor & winemaker, Trisaetum Winery, 18401 Cellars & Pashey Wines
With an undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley; a Masters in Exercise Physiology from the University of Arizona; and an M.B.A. from the University of Arizona, it seemed unlikely that James Frey would end up in wine. Nonetheless in 2003, he and his wife Andrea moved their young children to Oregon, bought a piece of land in the eastern foothills of the Coast Range mountains and planted the first of the three vineyards that now make up Trisaetum. His 8,000 case winery has received much critical acclaim in addition to articles published in over 20 national publications (including Forbes, Robb Report and the New York Times). His wines have been in the Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Wines of the World each of the past 5 years; and were served at a White House State Dinner in 2016. In addition to winemaking, James is a nationally recognized artist with paintings sold throughout the United States and the world. His paintings are currently on display as close as The Allison Inn in Newberg and the Moda Center in Portland, to as far away as The Clarion Post in Gothenburg, Maison Louis Jadot in Beaune, and the Masters of Wine offices in London. |
