Rising Disease Rates in the United States
Oct 24, 2019 12:00 PM
For over 7 years now I have been investigating and studying our healthcare system and the enormous rise in disease rates over recent years. The diabetes rates have soared from 32 million cases to well over 82 million in the U.S. alone and they are equally as severe in pre-diabeties, which means that 1/2 of Americans now are diabetic or nearly so.
The numbers on heart disease and cancer are climbing as well. We are clearly losing the war on disease prevention, reversal, and cures. These words aren't used anymore, just what pharmaceuticals we should take.
I tell the short stories of three Doctors who eliminated toxic foods from their own and their patients.eating plans. He worked with patients at death's doorway and had an extraordinarily high cure rate, almost 100%, just by mostly removing toxic foods. The others had similar results. The hundreds of millions of those learning to eat healthier and their children are now living long, healthy lives.

Portland Street Response
Nov 07, 2019 12:00 PM
The City of Portland is working on developing a new first response option: Portland Street Response. The goal of the Portland Street Response is to get the right first responder to the right call at the right time. Inspired by the City of Eugene’s CAHOOTS program, the Portland Street Response is an answer to the high number of calls emergency dispatchers receive, especially related to the houseless population and people dealing with mental health crises. The vision of Portland Street Response is to provide a new branch of first responders who are trained in behavioral health-related crisis intervention and first aid that can respond to 911 requests related to a behavioral health crisis or people experiencing houselessness that do not require police, fire, or ambulatory services. Commissioner Hardesty is currently working with the Mayor’s Office to convene a multi-jurisdictional stakeholder group to develop this pilot program. |

Wine
Nov 14, 2019 12:00 PM
James Frey, proprietor & winemaker, Trisaetum Winery, 18401 Cellars & Pashey Wines
With an undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley; a Masters in Exercise Physiology from the University of Arizona; and an M.B.A. from the University of Arizona, it seemed unlikely that James Frey would end up in wine. Nonetheless in 2003, he and his wife Andrea moved their young children to Oregon, bought a piece of land in the eastern foothills of the Coast Range mountains and planted the first of the three vineyards that now make up Trisaetum. His 8,000 case winery has received much critical acclaim in addition to articles published in over 20 national publications (including Forbes, Robb Report and the New York Times). His wines have been in the Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Wines of the World each of the past 5 years; and were served at a White House State Dinner in 2016. In addition to winemaking, James is a nationally recognized artist with paintings sold throughout the United States and the world. His paintings are currently on display as close as The Allison Inn in Newberg and the Moda Center in Portland, to as far away as The Clarion Post in Gothenburg, Maison Louis Jadot in Beaune, and the Masters of Wine offices in London. |

What is a Standardized Patient?
Jan 09, 2020 12:00 PM
Many medical schools locally and across the country make frequent use of standardized patients (SP) as part of their medical training curriculum. SP’s act the part of patients during encounters with the students. I have worked as an SP since 2003 with several colleges and universities in the Portland area. I will describe what SP programs entail and the different ways SP’s are trained and utilized. I will also share my experience over a wide range of specific case scenarios that are used to give the students an introduction with real life situations they will encounter in their practice. |

From Grief to Resilience
Jan 23, 2020 12:00 PM
Loss of a dear loved one will impact us all sooner or later. How one grieves greatly impacts one’s present and future well-being. Without appropriate help often the result of a devastating loss is prolonged despair, emptiness, and desperation. With proper guidance and support, most of us are able to reconcile our loss and move ahead, reestablishing a productive and enjoyable life.
Dave Ripley is not a professional in this field. But he did suffer the shattering loss of his wife of 45 years eight years ago, and, thanks to so much wonderful support, was able to rebuild his life. For the past five years, he has helped facilitate a grief support group at an area hospital as a hospice volunteer, continuing to learn more about this important life topic and those who experience it. In his talk, “From Grief to Resilience”, he covers why it is so important to talk about this topic, common grief myths, and a wide range of activities that can help in moving to resilience. |

Oregon's Prison System - things you should know but don't!
Feb 13, 2020 12:00 PM
Oregon's prison system badly needs review! Fifty years ago (when the crime rate was higher) Oregon's population was 2.2 million and our three prisons housed less than 2000 people. Today our population is 4.2 million and we have 15,500 people in prison in over 20 facilities. We spend more on prisons than we do on Higher Education! Many of our prisons are in remote areas - long distances from families and visitors. Frankly, they got there as "economic development" more than sound planning! Oregon's Dept of Corrections and Youth Authority are lead by extremely competent professionals who are striving to make thoughtful changes. The Public needs to know what's going on! Roger and Trevor have a story you need to hear!"

Big Brothers, Big Sisters
Feb 27, 2020 12:00 PM
Who we are:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth-serving organization that creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. The organization has been around for over 100 years and has been established in the Portland metro area since 2002.
Need: Male Mentors! We have a large need for male mentors in our community. We currently have a wait-list of over 150 Little Brothers seeking a Big Brother.
What is the role of a “Big”?
As a volunteer, we ask that you meet with your “Little” twice a month for a minimum of one year. You and your Little get to choose activities of your interests. Activities can range from taking a stroll at the park, grabbing ice cream together, reading a book at the library, and so on.
The role of a Big is to be a friend, a listener, a supporter, and a positive role model.
