Meeting in the Weyerhaeuser Room - A Pakistan 3rd Culture Perspective
Oct 11, 2018
We read much of the news and interpret history through a lens of where we are “from”. What would that view be if a white privileged American-born person was from Pakistan? A third culture perspective relates to this insider-outsider experience. One advantage is some measure of comfort traveling to fascinating parts of the world that appear unsafe to westerners. Another is the sense of being a global citizen and how this often sharpens an admiration for the American while simultaneously allowing critical self-reflection |

"A Good Place to Die"
Nov 15, 2018 12:00 PM
Author Jim Kesey will read from his recently released book, "A Good Place to Die."
Kesey takes you on an inspirational and heart-warming journey of Len O’Reilly, a 72 year old retiree, who doesn’t have long to live. He thinks he’s got it "all figured out" but his five day plan takes an unexpected turn. This rough and tumble Marine and Korean War Vet finds himself trying to survive instead choosing to die in an effort to save a young girl from a life without hope or a reason to live. He has to dig deep within his soul for the strength to overcome one challenge after another. He has the grit, hope and faith in his God… All he needs is time and time is running out. |

From the Clinic to the Classroom - A Journey in Community-Based Youth Heart Screenings with the Prov
Feb 07, 2019 12:00 PM
We are meeting in the Memorial Coliseum today
Providence Heart Institute (PHI) is pleased to offer, Play Smart –Youth Heart Screenings Program, a free youth heart screenings program that has been extremely successful in screening over 30,000+ youth and identifying 1,400+ students or 5% (to date) for further follow-up and treatment. Young people with undiagnosed heart defects, especially athletes, are susceptible to sudden cardiac arrest. Often there are no advance signs or symptoms and most routine physical exams will not pick up the defects. An electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) usually is necessary to uncover signs of heart irregularities, something normally not done in “well-child” checks or even some sports physicals. In an effort to protect the hearts of area middle and high school students, Play Smart offers free painless, noninvasive heart-health checks to youth aged 12-18. |
